Osprey at Nest

Each year I monitor a nearby osprey (Pandion haliaetus) nest near Crystal Lake (Shasta County CA). Last year (2015) a Canada goose pair co-opted the osprey nest. Three of their four hatchlings survived the descent from the tall perch. After the geese vacated the nest, an osprey pair raised their brood in the same nest.

A month ago (Shared Nest 04-13-2016) I noted that a Canada goose (Branta canadensis) pair was using the osprey nest again. A trip to the Tucson AZ area followed by visitors from Japan kept me away from the osprey nest for over a month. When I finally returned to the nest this week there was no sign of a Canada goose family in the lake, however, an osprey pair was using the nest. Unfortunately, I will never know if the nest produced any goslings this year.
