Hovering Hawk

Rough-legged Hawk

Rough-legged Hawk

The rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) is another winter resident soon to return to its summer breeding grounds in the Arctic tundra.

When hunting, rough-legged hawks will face into the wind and hover as they search for prey in open fields, pastures and grasslands. When we see a hovering raptor in the winter, rough-legged hawk immediately comes to mind.

Usually I do not like the pictures I take of birds coming toward the camera. This photograph taken along County Road 91 near Lookout CA (Modoc County) is an exception.
