The Western grebes (Aechmorphorus occidentalis) that summer in our area (Northeastern California) are migrating to the inshore waters of the Pacific Coast where they will spend the winter.
Western grebes spend almost all of their time in the water. Although graceful in the water, Western grebes’ legs are placed far back on their body making them awkward on land.
Western grebes eat mainly fish.
This stately swimmer was photographed on the Tule River (Shasta County CA).
