Anise Swallowtail

One of the most common swallowtails west of the Rockies, the anise swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon), is a butterfly of the open countryside. Its caterpillars feed on species within the parsley family. This adult was puddling on moist soil on the shore of Baum Lake (Shasta County CA).
