Canada Goose in Osprey Nest

Canada Goose in Osprey Nest

The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) are back for the summer. For each of the last five years I watched an osprey pair raise their chicks in a nest located atop a ponderosa pine snag near Crystal Lake (Shasta County CA). Today I returned to the osprey nest to check if there was any activity. What a surprise to find a Canada goose (Branta canadensis) in the nest. From the way the goose is behaving, it appears to be sitting on eggs. What is the goose doing on a nest over 30 feet above the ground? How will the goslings safely get down? What will the osprey do about the goose if they return to claim their nest? I will be observing the nest with interest over the next days.
