Our Japanese son-in-law passed along an interesting bit of trivia concerning the common name of the joro spider (Nephila clavata) on which I did a recent post – Joro Spider. In Japan the spider is known as joro-gumo.
Chikuma said joro is “a slang term from the past for a call girl. Apparently the spider is happy to “sleep” anywhere. . . . . ”
I had to share.
Scary, but oh! what beautiful colours.

The colors are what first attracted me to this arachnid.

Thank Chikuma for that local insight into this particular inhabitant of his island.
