Today in honor of the full moon I am simply going to share a picture taken at Baum Lake (Shasta County CA) a couple of days ago. The moon was not quite full – but close enough.
This subadult bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was putting on a show. He or she, along with a second immature eagle, kept flying overhead and then would fly directly at me, veering off at the last moment. I believe it is a three-year old because the bill and eye are turning yellow. Finally he landed on a nearby maple tree (note the winter buds). The branches were perhaps a little too thin to hold the eagle’s weight and would buckle, forcing the eagle to regain his balance with a flurry of wing flapping. What a beautiful moment with the sun setting to my back and the moon rising behind the bald eagle.
